Chevy Chase DC is a Northwest Washington neighborhood bounded by Rock Creek Park on the east, Western Avenue on the north, Reno Road and the Friendship Heights neighborhood on the west, and Broad Branch Road on the south between 32nd and 27th Streets. The area was developed beginning in the early 1900s after construction was completed on the Chevy Chase Line, a streetcar line linking the area to downtown Washington.
The Chevy Chase Land Company was founded in 1890 by then-Representative Francis G. Newlands of Nevada and his partners, who began buying farmland in northwest Washington DC to develop a residential streetcar suburb. Over succeeding decades, the formerly remote area was transformed from farmland and woods to single-family housing.
The neighborhood consists primarily of early 20th century single-family homes built in various architectural styles popular during the 1900s through 1940s. Most residential blocks feature tree-lined sidewalks, well-maintained front yards, and a mix of architectural periods reflecting different phases of development throughout the early to mid-20th century.
Connecticut Avenue NW serves as the neighborhood's major commercial road, home to local businesses, community services, and a regional branch of the DC Public Library. The area maintains a concentration of locally owned establishments that serve the residential neighborhood.
Chevy Chase DC features architectural styles from early 20th century development:
Colonial Revival: Two-story homes with symmetrical facades, center-hall layouts, traditional trim, and columned porches. These brick homes typically feature formal living and dining rooms with compartmentalized floor plans.
Tudor Revival: Homes with steeply pitched roofs, decorative half-timbering, brick and stone exteriors, and arched doorways. Many feature original leaded glass windows and distinctive architectural details.
Craftsman Bungalows: Single-story and one-and-a-half story homes with low-pitched roofs, exposed rafters, wide front porches, and built-in woodwork. These homes emphasize natural materials and horizontal lines.
Cape Cod Style: Compact homes with steep-pitched roofs, dormers, and traditional New England styling adapted for the Washington climate.
Historic Kit Houses: Chevy Chase DC contains nearly 100 authenticated historic catalog houses built between 1915 and 1932. These mail-order homes came from four manufacturers: Sears Roebuck & Co., Lewis Manufacturing Co., International Mill and Lumber (Sterling), and Gordon-Van Tine. Popular models included the Lewis "Chevy Chase," Sears "Americus," and Sears "Martha Washington."
American Foursquares: Two-story homes with simple, boxy shapes and efficient layouts, often featuring Prairie Style influences with wide, overhanging eaves.
