Brookland is a Northeast DC neighborhood bounded by Taylor Street NE and Michigan Avenue NE to the northwest, Rhode Island Avenue NE to the southeast, South Dakota Avenue NE to the northeast, and Washington Metro's Red Line tracks to the west. Brookland developed around the Catholic University of America and several affiliated institutions. The neighborhood grew from the Brooks family estate and became one of Washington's first streetcar suburbs in the late 19th century.
The land that became Brookland originally belonged to Nicholas Queen, part of the Queen family that owned considerable property in northeast DC. Through marriage in 1830, the estate passed to Ann Queen Brooks, wife of Colonel Jehiel Brooks, a lawyer and veteran who served as an Indian agent in Louisiana. The transition from country estate to residential development began in 1887 when the Brooks family first subdivided their property, marking the extension of suburban growth into the northeastern sector of Washington.
Growth accelerated throughout the 1870s when the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad opened its Western Branch Line, which now incorporates the Washington Metro's Red Line. With the construction of nearby subdivisions and expansion of Washington's streetcar system, a streetcar suburb developed featuring spacious lots and single-family homes that provided a small-town atmosphere within the growing city.
Brookland features architectural styles reflecting its development from the 1880s through the mid-20th century:
Queen Anne Victorian Homes: Built during the late 1800s and early 1900s, these homes feature steeply pitched roofs, irregular shapes, bay windows, decorative gables, turrets, and ornate details. Many include wide front lawns and showcase the sculptural shapes and ornamentation characteristic of the Victorian era.
Craftsman Style Homes: Early 20th century homes characterized by low-pitched roofs, deep eaves, exposed rafters, substantial front porches, and built-in features like bookcases. These one or one-and-a-half story homes emphasize natural materials and clean, well-crafted lines with minimal ornamentation.
Bungalows: Comfortable single-story and one-and-a-half story homes with broad front porches, low-pitched roofs with significant overhang, and efficient layouts. These homes typically feature most living space on the ground floor with rambling, horizontal designs.
Victorian Rowhouses: Late 19th century attached homes featuring decorative details, bay windows, and period architectural elements adapted for urban living.
American Foursquares: Two-story homes with simple, boxy shapes and efficient layouts, often featuring Prairie Style influences and practical design elements.
Contemporary Condominiums: Modern developments including Monroe Street Market area buildings featuring mixed-use design with retail at street level and residential units above.
Historic Unique Properties: Notable examples include the Round House at 10th and Irving (built 1901) and other architecturally distinctive homes reflecting individual design preferences.
