Bowie is a city in Prince George's County, Maryland, located along the US 50 corridor between Washington, D.C. and Annapolis. The city had 58,329 residents in the 2020 Census and covers 20.44 square miles of land. The City of Bowie describes the community as approximately 20 square miles, with more than 1,373 acres set aside as parks or preserved open space.
Bowie's origins trace to the railroad. In 1853, Colonel William Duckett Bowie obtained a charter from the Maryland legislature to construct a rail line into Southern Maryland. The Baltimore and Potomac Railroad opened its main line on January 1, 1873, and a spur line to Washington, D.C. had been inaugurated on July 2, 1872. The junction of the two lines formed the core around which the town grew. Developer Ben Plumb purchased 300 acres at the junction and surveyed it for town lots.
The settlement was originally known as Huntington City, incorporated by the Maryland Legislature on March 3, 1874. In 1880, the Legislature renamed the town Bowie in honor of Governor Oden Bowie, who had served as president of the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad and as Governor of Maryland from 1869 to 1872. The town was formally incorporated in 1916.
A significant portion of Bowie's mid-century residential character is tied to Belair at Bowie, a Levitt and Sons development built during the 1960s on a 2,226-acre tract. The development was ultimately completed with about 7,500 homes, including Cape Cod, ranch, Colonial, and other Levitt-era models. The homes were organized into planned sections with alliterative street naming. The town annexed the Levitt properties and re-incorporated as the City of Bowie in 1963.
Bowie features housing reflecting both its mid-century planned development and ongoing residential growth:
Levitt-Era Single-Family Homes: A significant share of Bowie's housing dates to the 1960s and early 1970s Belair at Bowie development. Styles include Cape Cod, ranch, split-level, and Colonial models built by Levitt and Sons. These homes typically feature three to four bedrooms, one- or two-car garages, and lots with front and rear yards. Many original homes have been expanded or renovated with updated kitchens, bathrooms, and additions.
Contemporary Single-Family Homes: Newer construction in sections developed after the Levitt era, featuring updated floor plans, modern amenities, and larger footprints on established lots.
Townhomes: Attached homes in planned developments throughout the city, including Levitt-era town house sections built in the late 1960s and newer communities with contemporary styling and amenities.
Condominiums: Garden-style and mid-rise buildings offering lower-maintenance living options near commercial corridors and transportation routes.
Estate and Custom Homes: Larger homes on generously sized lots in newer sections of the city, featuring contemporary construction and custom designs.
